Laptop donations in the time of COVID-19

COVID-19 is dramatically changing the way students learn and Hong Kong is no exception in shifting to online classes. This switch has been challenging for many students from low-income households with very limited access to the electronic devices that have become an integral part of modern life. Aware of this gap, volunteers of the Hong Kong Association of the Order of Malta lost no time in calling out to our community for donations of spare laptops and electronic devices.
Desiree Jebsen, Hospitaller of the Association, said, “We were informed that some families with school-aged children were either short on laptops or their children were struggling to attend online classes and keep up with the school work. It was clear that the lack of access to technology was adversely affecting their education. The Order made a first call for pre-owned laptops as part of a bigger plan to empower the children in their learning. Within a week, 10 pre-owned laptops, a desktop and various computer accessories were delivered to the Caritas Ngai Tau Kok Center for distribution to the families in need. ”
