Knights and Dames with A Mission of Care
In the 11th century, members of the Order, the Knights of Malta were known then as ‘Knights Hospitaller’.  They always established first a Hospital and Hospice wherever they settled to care for the sick and in need regardless of race or belief.  The Order of Malta has remained constant to its mission and has continue to evolve over 900 years through it’s hospitaller and humanitarian works.
Today, the majority of its members no longer come from ancient noble families, and are admitted because of manifest merits acquired thanks to the commitment in the Order of Malta’s works.  While some members of the Order of Malta are religious according to Canon Law, most of the Order of Malta’s 13,500 knights and dames are lay members. Although they have not pronounced any religious vow, they are all devoted to the exercise of Christian virtue and charity, and committed to developing their spirituality within the Catholic Church and to expending their energies collaborating in the medical and social works of the Order.
The knighthood’s nature remains as a tradition of commitment and reflects each member’s devotion to the spirit of service and the assistance activities of the Order summarised in the motto “Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum” – nurturing, witnessing and protecting the faith and serving the poor and the sick – which become reality through humanitarian projects and social assistance locally and internationally.  Members must demonstrate dedication to these principles and the relevant Grand Priory or National Association is responsible for proposals of admission.
Members Admission
Members of the Order of Malta are admitted by invitation. The qualifications for membership together with the spiritual and other obligations are set out in the constitution and regulations of the Order.  Members are made up of Catholics in good standing who have acquired merit over the years with regard to the Order of Malta and its humanitarian works.  The Members: Knights and Dames of Malta, are committed to meeting the spiritual and other duties of membership which includes the social responsibility in reaching out to people in need through the Order’s activities.
The mission of the Order of Malta in Hong Kong thrives on the commitment and hands-on work of their Members: the Knights and Dames of Malta, in partnerships with local social assistance organizations as well as a wide Volunteer base.
