The Computer Club: Laptops and Online Classes in time of COVID-19
The Hong Kong Association of the Order of Malta has a new offering!
Starting 6 September, our Flying Young volunteers will hold bi-weekly free online classes for the children of families who have difficulty in coping with the educational challenges presented by the pandemic. These children have no access to computers and in order to fill this need, our volunteers have launched a Computer Club.
At the Kick-off Ceremony on 30 August 2020, we distributed 44 sets of laptops for the year on a rent-free basis to the families who signed up. As part of the package, the Club will also offer 24 free online classes that cover a broad range of topics. Members will learn the ‘getting to know your laptop’ basics, from Excel spreadsheets to internet safety. There will be fun and interactive courses on healthy eating, exercise, fitness, environmental care and other useful skills.
Each online class will be hosted by one English-speaking and one-Cantonese speaking volunteer.
Project Leader Marina Fairfax, said, “Not only will the children gain vital skills that will help them with their studies, but they will also have the opportunity to learn English by communicating with the Flying Young Computer Club volunteers! We hope that by organizing these online classes, our volunteers can continue building mutual relationships with the families and help equip the children to widen their knowledge and horizon.”
We need your help! If you have computer skills and/or bilingual English/Cantoses language skills and/or like teaching online, please sign up as a Computer Club volunteer by contacting us at info@orderofmalta.org.
It’s a fun way to share and care in time of Covid-19.
