Celebrating Chinese New Year with the Lok Yi School students
Chinese New Year celebrations are all about large group gatherings with family and friends. Social distancing measures did not stop our volunteers last 2 February, from getting creative and organizing a very different kind of celebration for the Caritas Lok Yi School boarding students. On offer were a series of great activities on Zoom, to celebrate the traditions of this much loved Chinese festival.
The festivities kicked off with writing Chinese “Fai Chun” – everyone wrote their favorite pleasing and auspicious phrases to bless each other and send good wishes.
Some students and volunteers were inspired to draw and make up their own phrases. Joyful dancing and jubilant singing to Chinese New Year songs followed, with favourites like “dong dong qiang” and “Kung Hey Fat Choy” rousing the spirit of celebration.
Next, Project Leader Vivian Mock led everyone in a guessing game. Blissful Chinese New Year characters appeared on the screen and our very clever students quickly deciphered these clues to guess the phrases correctly. The evening wrapped up with each student receiving a “Lai See” red packet of a blessing card and favourite sweets plus a Chinese New Year cake. Warm greetings of best wishes were exchanged as everyone bade goodbye to close off a great evening.
