Congratulations to our Computer Club 2021 students for their accomplishments!

07/03/2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in a new normal for child education in Hong Kong. Classes have shifted online, and unprivileged children with no access to computers are disproportionately affected. To tackle this inequity, the Order of Malta in Hong Kong has provided 40 brand new laptops and 4 pre-owned laptops, throughout multiple school closures, to the most vulnerable families since September 2020. This initiative has provided relief to young students in challenging circumstances at a time of immense uncertainty, allowing them to keep learning alive.

In addition to providing computers, the volunteer teachers of our Flying Young Program also offered free online courses to children who struggled with the educational challenges. Led by Marina Fairfax, the Flying Young Program has provided 45 online classes since September 2020, covering a broad range of topics. The dual language classes, listed below, were taught in English by a native speaker volunteer with the support of a Cantonese-speaking volunteer.

On 19 December 2021, a total of 91 students aged 5-9 and 78 students aged 10-13 successfully completed the 2021 term. Our volunteer teachers were overwhelmed by the joy and enthusiasm of the students, and humbled by their strong learning spirit amidst very challenging circumstances. Congratulations to all of our students!

To celebrate the students’ outstanding success, The Hong Kong Association of the Order of Malta, on February 6, 2022, awarded the following Certificates of Completion to 26 students:

Certificate of Completion – Gold Award: Granted to 12 students who successfully turned in 70% or more of the assignments.

Certificate of Completion – Silver Award: Granted to 14 students who successfully turned in 50% or more of the assignments.

Congratulations to our Gold & Silver Award winners! We testify, from the bottom of our hearts, to their eagerness and diligence in learning.

Marina, the Project Leader of the Program, said: “The launching of the first-year program was a great success. We saw the aspiration of the children to learn more knowledge in life skill beside English language. We started expanding the program from bi-weekly classes for 40 children to weekly classes for over 100 children. We employ a tutorial consultant to design customized classes for two age groups of children in order to equip them with suitable knowledge according to their age level.”

The Flying Young volunteers of the Hong Kong Association of the Order of Malta are grateful to the community for their generous support which has enabled us to accompany the children in their growth.
