Students with SEN and volunteers enjoy the fun Day Camp

22/11/2024

Since our very first and successful Asia Pacific Youth Camp in Hong Kong, the Order of Malta Hong Kong (OMHK) decided to bring this life-changing adventure to students with special education needs from Caritas Lok Yi School on 16 November, 2024.  The Day Camp was held at the Jockey Club PHAB Camp in Pok Fu Lam, attracting over 50 volunteers.  With the financial support and volunteers from JP Morgan Chase and Lion Club, we hosted this meaningful and successful event for almost 30 students and 15 family members and staff fromt he School.

Before the kick-start of the Camp’s activities, Father Peter Choy, VG celebrated a Mass to bless the students and volunteers. Immediately after the Mass, our volunteers led the participants to use their beautiful dance moves to express their joy.

Our Camp Leaders, Florence Wan, Xavier Keung, and Hugo Wong, prepared four sports activities, includingtable tennis, ISPC shooting, VR game, and Molkky for all participants.   All the participants were divided and assigned to four different coloured teams. Within two hours, they took turns to finish all these four sports activities.  The novelty of these activities brought lots of excitement and new experiences to both students and volunteers.

After two hours non-stop activities, everyone started to feel tired and hungry.  The students could not wait to grab a seat at the dinning table and enjoyed the delicious lunch.  Our volunteers also assisted the students who required assistance for feeding.  The strong friendship and bonding were uniquely built up through the activities.

The last part of the Camp was the fun and interactive team games.  The four teams competed among themselves and excitement started to level up. We saw the cheerful smile from many of these students.  Our volunteers tirelessly cheered for the students to finish the race.

At the end of the Camp, OMHK President, Mrs. Desiree Jebsen, presented the gold medals to each participant of the winning team.

Mrs. Jebsen said: “I would like to thank the Project Leader, Florence, and the Organising Team for such an amazing camp.  The children all had a great time and enjoyed their day tremendously.  The volunteers were all engaged and very involved.  It was an incredible joy to watch this and take part in the children’s fun.”
