Elderly friends taking part in the “Fire” Dragon Dance
Fancy a taste of Traditional Fire Dragon Dance? To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, Flying Seniors Project Leaders Ambrose Ng and Teresa Lo organized a fun afternoon to celebrate the traditional festival on 14 September. 9 volunteers from the Order of Malta Hong Kong helped to prepare some warm-up games and the head of the “Fire Dragon” . Althought it was was made of colourful cardboards and not burning sticks, the “Fire Dragon” looked so lively.
To start the event, Teresa and volunteers first played some fun games – Pictionary and lantern riddles. Volunteers and elderly friends took turns drawing some images for the participants to guess the items. Following the games, our volunteers decorated the room with beautiful lanterns and riddles. The volunteers helped the elderly friends mark down the answers for the lantern riddles. The room was transformed into the traditional lantern market. After the lantern tour, Teresa hosted a Q&A session and shared the stories about the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival. Some of the friends started to tell us their childhood memories of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The afternoon’s highlight was decorating the “Fire Dragon” and putting the body parts together. Some of the elderly friends enjoyed dancing with the “Fire Dragon”.
It was truly a wonderful time to spend with the elderly friends. We look forward to the Christmas event in December.
