Horizon Club Outing to Mui Wo

06/12/2025

Expanding the horizon for the children from low-income families is one of the objectives of Horizon Club.  On 6 December, 2025, Hospitaller Sophie Mensdorff and Project Leader Marina Coghill organized an Outing to Mui Wo and a Nature Workshop for the children.  Tom and Karlyn, the host and hostess of the Mindful Garden, designed the Nature Workshop to provide a nature-based workshop including garden tour, soil and planting workshop, tree climbing, and bon fire for the children to frolick in the wild.

The programme included a guided garden tours, a soil and planting workshop, tree climbing, and a joyful bonfire, allowing the children to reconnect with nature and frolic freely in the wild.

The day began with the group: Sophie, Horizon Club Teacher Abby and volunteer Ovril, social worker Lillian, 8 children and 4 parents gathering at Central Pier No. 6 before boarding the ferry to Mui Wo. Upon arrival, our enthusiastic volunteers Anna and Louise, together with Teaching Assistant Jasmin, warmly welcomed everyone at Mui Wo Pier. After a pleasant 20-minute walk, the group reached Mindful Garden, where the children were thrilled to spot a herd of water buffalo grazing peacefully on the nearby grassland.

Tom kicked off the workshop with an engaging introduction to the history of the area, followed by a guided tour of the garden. The children learned how to identify suitable soil for planting, how to transplant baby plants, and how to secure their plants with string so they could take them home. The undisputed highlights of the day were the tree-climbing adventure and a visit to Silver Mine Bay Beach, where everyone enjoyed a delightful beach picnic with delicious sandwiches and lunch packs kindly prepared by Marina.

At the end of the day, Marina expressed heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers for their dedication and hard work. Jasmin described the outing as “absolutely lovely,” and Abby said the outing was super fun, noting how the children had embraced outdoor activities, gained confidence, and overcome initial fears in an unfamiliar natural environment.Through experiences like this, Horizon Club continues to nurture curiosity, resilience, and a love for nature in the children we serve.
