Flying Seniors bring joy and festive cheer to ederly friends in Western District Celebration

03/02/2026

Since launching the Flying Seniors project, our team has proudly continued the tradition of celebrating Chinese New Year alongside our dear elderly friends from the Western District Elderly Community Centre.

On January 31, we once again partnered with Raimondi College, who kindly sent eight enthusiastic students and MissSin, their teacher to join the festivities. Flying Seniors leaders Ambrose Ng and Teresa Lo carefully designed a series of engaging activities and games to celebrate with 15 wonderful elderly participants.

Next came an event began with Teresa leading a popular online brain-teaser game: “Spot the Differences” using two similar pictures. As always, the elderly friends delighted everyone by quickly identifying all three errors before the students!

Next came an came an enlightening Q & A session on fun facts about the Year of the Horse. It proved eye-opening for most of the seniors and was equally educational for all the students. The Raimondi College volunteers then hosted an exciting game of “Actionary,” where two or three students acted out Chinese phrases related to horses for the elderly to guess—sparking plenty of laughter and interaction.

One of the students, Vincent, said, “I thought our performance was so poor that it would be impossible to guess the answer.  It was so amazing to see they got all the answers correct and so fast.”

To wrap up the creative portion, Teresa guided an arts-and-crafts activity, teaching everyone how to make beautiful “Fai Chun” (spring couplets) from colourful paper. The student volunteers patiently assisted the seniors, helping them follow instructions and add their own unique touches. It was heartwarming to watch participants of all ages fully immersed, drawing and crafting with enthusiasm.

Finally, the students presented thoughtful coupons from a local Chinese bakery to each elderly friend, accompanied by warm wishes for a blessed and joyful Year of the Horse.

Events like these remind us of the power of intergenerational connection, bringing smiles, learning, and festive spirit to our community. Thank you to everyone who made this special day possible!
