Celebrating Mother’s Day with Special Needs Children

09/05/2018

“Mother” is one of the most beautiful words in any language. Many mothers would long to hear their precious ones call them “Mom”. However, in the case of special needs children, this unique bond takes an even more precious form, with many children finding such expressions difficult.

Partnering with Lok Yi School’s social workers, a group of 9 volunteers from the Order of Malta Hong Kong assisted these children in demonstrating their love to their mothers, as a gesture to celebrate Mother’s Day. Finding photos that symbolising of mother and displaying them on a notice board beautified with flowers, the children were able to express their appreciation on this wonderful day.

The evening was filled with joy and love. The highlight was the mini-concert which featured singing and dancing, with the children singing a song together about how grateful they are for their mothers. While the music was playing, some children were dancing happily with their mothers and the volunteers. After such an exciting evening, the children were all exhausted and ready to call it a night. Our volunteers accompanied the children to return back to their bedrooms. Before we left, the children sang a goodbye song. We were all so touched by how warm this occasion was for all involved, with the sheer amount of happiness and joy felt during the day being enough to stay with the volunteers for the rest of their lives.
